Hello people of the internet! I’m Ross of Teddy Eva Scents, and I’m here to talk about everyone’s least favourite thing: price changes!
I dare say you’ll be getting a lot of these emails between now and April, so I thought I’d give you a bit of a heads up as to what we’re doing and why. These will be coming into effect from January 1st 2025.
Short version: we’re putting prices up to increase wages.
Early notice on Price Changes
When we first started Teddy Eva Scents we had ZERO intention of ever getting to the point where we needed to hire people. Fast forward a year and we needed help 😂
We didn’t want to put an actual job out because we didn’t have a sodding clue how you did it, or what employment law was, how to do a contract, and all that jazz. Believe it or not, you don’t actually get much help when you start a business, you kinda just get left to it.
So we were lucky enough to be able to take on Jenny - who had worked with me at Royal Mail. Back then, minimum wage was actually only £8.72 😱
Obviously we didn’t pay minimum wage back then. I’ve always believed that people deserve a decent wage regardless of age, so I wasn’t going to go against that now that we were the ones paying the wage.
I don’t personally believe they should have minimum wage based on age. When Kaitlyn worked for us this year we could’ve paid her £6.40/hour, which is mental.
So for the past few years we’ve always been quite a bit above the minimum wage.
But, in April 2025 it will go up to £12.21 per hour, marking a 6.7% rise from the current rate of £11.44. This means that minimum wage will just about be more than what we’re paying now.
So naturally we HAVE to increase wages, but we also want to increase them a little further on top.
We’ll be matching the Living Wage Foundations living wage which is £12.60. We would look to get accredited by them, but you have to pay £69/year just to be able to say we’re officially a Living Wage Employer.
Unfortunately, the only way you can truly increase wages is by increasing prices too. Sure, you can try to cut costs somewhere else, but then something else will suffer, and I don’t want to skimp on products in order to save money. So we’re left with the only logical thing we can do. That’s increase our prices.
Price Changes…
So here’s a little rundown of the new prices that will come into effect in January:
Teddy Pots - 10% increase to £1.65
Sample Boxes - up to £17.50 - to reflect the Teddy Pot increase and box costs. We will up the second box discount from 20% to 25% though. Which basically means if you buy two you’ll get them for roughly £15 each.
Teddy Clamshells - 10% increase to £5.50
Mystery box - 10% increase to £22 - we’re working on a sexier new box for this too!
Subscription Box - £1 increase - again, we’re working on a sexy box for this as well!
Everything else is going to remain the same. We did have to increase postage from £3.75 to £3.99, but that was due to Royal Mail increasing prices and we don’t even cover postage at the moment as it is 😂
We are keeping free postage at £30 though.
I know no one likes price increases. We do the best we possibly can to keep things affordable for people and fairly priced. To be honest, I almost ruined the entire business and let it die because I didn’t want to increase prices 😅
Inflation can wreck things fairly quickly if you don’t keep up with it. But what did I know, I’d never had a period of high inflation before!?
But I want Teddy Eva Scents to be a positive thing for everyone involved, from the people who work for us to the people who buy from us, and even the people in our local community. I guess I can only do that if Teddy Eva Scents is still alive 😂
Prices will change around the 1st of January
So whilst I won’t be sat there with my fingers on the laptop at midnight on New Year’s Eve, I will be changing them on the 1st. I dare say it might take a while? I know you can bulk edit, but that’s still quite a lot to change.
Either way, thank you for all of the support you’ve shown us. I know for some of you this might now be the end. Last time I changed the Teddy Pot price someone left us a 2 star review on TrustPilot just because they didn’t like the price. God help them going to Asda 😅
But thank you!
And if I don’t catch you before Christmas, I just want to say Merry Christmas!
Much love,
Ross & Rachel x
Still easily some of the cheapest prices I've seen for wax melts! The quality is there too, can't complain especially when they're valid reasons to up the prices as well
